IdeaFunding is Arizona's second largest pitch competition, giving over $100,000 of non-dilutive funds and services to Arizona startup teams each year.

PITCH COMPETITION APPLICATION

Date: October 17th, 2019
Location: Tucson Convention Center. Tucson, Arizona 
Time: Mainstage Pitch Competition: 12:00pm - 1:45pm, Vertical Pitch Rooms: 4:00pm - 4:45pm 

*Please Ensure you Mark Your Calendars for the Pitch Training Events. Currently scheduled for Tucson, but Phoenix location may also be added*

Timeline

  • Application Closes: August 26th at 11:59pm

  • All teams notified of application status: September 2nd

  • Pitch Training Day 1 and Round 1 Cuts: September 7th from 10am--3pm (qualifying applicants are cut down to the top teams) 

  • Pitch Training Day 2: September 12th from 4pm--7pm. Hands-on mentoring and coaching. 

  • Pitch Training Day 3 Round 2 Cuts: Tuesday Sept 17th from 4pm--7pm. The round ends with selection of Main Stage and Vertical Pitch Room companies.  

  • October 9th: Startup Coffee Elevator Pitch Practice (optional & as time allows)

  • October 10th: Final Pitch Decks Due

  • October 16th: Main Stage Dress Rehearsal @ Tucson Convention Center, 6:30pm - 7:30pm

  • October 17th: IdeaFunding Pitch Competition 

Application Process

There will be a one month public application window followed by training, mentoring, and further cuts to narrow down to the final teams. Based on company readiness, teams will be selected to pitch for the Main Stage $25,000 Prize or be sorted into the Vertical Pitch Rooms competing for $5,000 prize of cash and services. 

Final pitch decks are due Oct 10th and cannot be altered. The finalist teams will have the opportunity to practice in the venue space the evening before the pitch competition. 

 

Pitch guidelines and rubrics will be posted in advance, to ensure transparency and equity. Teams that do not follow the stated rules, regulations, and deadlines will be disqualified. 

 

Additional Benefits & Prizes:

  • Throughout the weeks leading up to and directly after IdeaFunding the finalists will have PR opportunities and public appearances, like presenting at Startup Coffee

  • Pitch teams will receive free passports for TENWEST 

  • The finalists will have the opportunity to professionally film promos for their companies to be used for social media campaigns launched in the weeks prior to IdeaFunding. The team with the most successful social media campaign (measured in likes and shares) will receive bonus prizes

  • The Adelante Arizona Prize will be offered to one winning company founded by a woman or person of color

  • A special prize, sponsored by United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, will be offered to the team whose idea has the greatest impact on society

Application Process: 

The general pitch competition application consists of submitting the following items by email before the deadline: 

  1. Item One (Required): A powerpoint/keynote pitch deck in PDF format. Read below for required content. 

  2. Item Two (Required): A signed acknowledgement of the rules, regulations, and requirements. 

  3. Item Three (Optional): You may submit a link to a 2 minute video about your company. 

 

You may also choose to apply for two additional special prizes -- the Adelante Arizona Prize and the Social Impact Award. Read More Below

Pitch Deck Guidelines  

You are to submit a ten page powerpoint deck, converted to PDF format. Each page must align with the content​ listed below and fully answer the question posed. 

 

  1. Company Information:

    • Founder(s) names 

    • Contact information 

    • Website (if applicable) 

    • Certified woman, minority, or veteran owned (y/n/federally eligible but not yet certified)

    • At revenue or pre-revenue 

    • Patented or patent-pending IP (y/n/eligible but not yet applied) 

    • Any current mentors & their contact information 

  2. What is the problem you are seeking to fix?

  3. Who is the customer you are seeking to reach?

  4. What is your unique value proposition?

  5. Describe your solution

  6. How will your product reach people (what channels do you intent to use to get customers)?

  7. What will your revenue streams be and how are they structured?

  8. What is the cost structure?

  9. What are your key metrics of success?

  10.  Any additional information you wish to provide

Rules and Regs Agreement 

Video (Optional)

All videos must be accessible to the committee via link (aka Youtube or Vimeo link).  The video must introduce your company and should address: 

  • What your company could accomplish with the prize money 

  • The potential benefit that your company brings to  Arizona’s economy

Teams will not be judged on the video quality, but rather on the thoughtfulness of the responses and the strengths of the ideas presented. 
 

Pitch Training

Pitch training is a critical element of the process as we do multiple rounds of cuts through the training process. Please review the timeline carefully and ensure you available to participate.  Trainings are currently held in Tucson, however a Phoenix training location may also be added.  Stay tuned for updates. High quality pitch training and mentoring is made possible through our partner, University of Arizona Center for Innovation.

SOCIAL IMPACT PRIZE

Presented by United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona

United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona is a local, 501c(3) non-profit committed to building a thriving community by uniting people, ideas and resources. United Way convenes people and organizations to find innovative solutions that impact more than 155,000 lives in Southern Arizona each year. In line with their mission of fostering innovation to make significant social impacts, United Way is presenting the $5,000 Social Impact Award within IdeaFunding, a part of TENWEST. This prize aims to to bring attention to the ways in which business, technology, and entrepreneurship can address the grand challenges facing our world today. 

 

Who Qualifies:

Companies must be Arizona-based and must have the potential to make a significant social impact. 

 

How to Apply:

Create a 1 minute video that:

  1. Introduces your company

  2. Describes who your company will positively impact and how

  3. Described why this impact is needed to help build a thriving community

 

Social Media Campaign: Application Booster

Teams are encouraged to create social media campaigns around their video. The team’s ability to garner likes and shares will garner additional points in the application process, but will not be the only rubric for decisions.

Adelante Arizona Prize

Currently in the US, investments in women and minority owned companies are 80 percent lower than the median investment in businesses overall. This means that women and minority owned companies face more hurdles in growing and building their companies. Through the Adelante Prize at IdeaFunding, TENWEST wants to bring attention to this issue and highlight the incredibly talented women and minority founders contributing to the vibrant startup ecosystem in Arizona. In addition to a cash prize, the winning team will receive mentoring, goods and services, and connections and introductions to help accelerate the growth of their company valuing up to $5,000.

Who Qualifies:

Companies must be Arizona-based and must have more than 50% woman or minority founder(s).

 

How to Apply:

Create a 1 minute video that

  1. Introduces your company

  2. Addresses why winning the Adelante Arizona Prize at IdeaFunding is important for your company

  3. Described what investments your company plans on making with the prize money should you win
