TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - A new program, led by Startup Tucson, is hoping to attract remote workers to Tucson and increase the city’s economic development. “This is a great way to offer some perks and benefits to young professionals that are looking to work somewhere else physically than where their workplace is,” said Zach Yentzer, the executive director of Tucson Young Professionals.

Startup Tucson’s pilot program, Remote Tucson, is accepting remote workers from any industry. Each will receive money to relocate, free internet, housing support and other incentives that are worth more than $7,500 in total.

“Gives an opportunity to attract a skilled workforce to help us be further successful later on down the road when we need to recruit companies that need that talent,” said Director of Economic Initiatives for the City of Tucson Barbra Coffee.

A warm climate, unique culture, low cost of living and opportunity to explore the outdoors are a few of the reasons the program feels remote workers, who can work from any city, may choose to move to Tucson.

“Given the times when people are trying to get out of our urban, dense core cities like New York, San Francisco and Boston, they choose Tucson because it has this great quality of life,” Coffee said.

Attracting skilled professionals gives a boost to the economy.

“It’s also more people who are buying our goods and services, supporting our community, so I think this is a win-win all the way around,” Yentzer said.

The hope is for the talented workers to stay in Tucson after participation in the one-year program ends.

“Labor pool is important when it comes to economic development and we want to attract the best and the brightest,” Coffee said.

The pilot program is accepting 10 people with an eventual goal of 100 people per year.

Eligible applicants must be at least 18-years-old, employed remotely full-time and be able to move to Tucson within 6 months of being accepted. Find more information on the program, here.
