Thank you for returning to the #StartupScoop -- the best way to stay in the Startup Tucson loop! I hope your Fourth of July was filled with fireworks, friends, and family. The big kabang coming out of Startup Tucson this week is our Startup Skills Clinic!
In past Scoops, you have read about the how and why of our redesigned suite of programs. After even more customer interviews, input from our Startup Tucson Advisory Committee and tons of research on entrepreneurial best practice, we rolled out the second step in our newly modified program pipeline in April -- our first ever Startup Skills Clinic.
Data shows that 72% of startups fail because of a few simple, preventable mistakes. Our Clinic was designed with this in mind and the goal of helping founders start to identify and avoid these common traps.
Offered once a Quarter, the Clinic is a full Saturday workshop for founders that are ready to assess their business’ strengths and weaknesses and create concrete next steps.
The first two hours of the Clinic are dedicated to education. Founders practice their pitches, learn from local entrepreneurial thought leaders, and tinker with their lean canvas. After spending the morning working on their business models, founders then have an off-site lunch with peers, where we encourage them to gather input and ideas and talk through their lean canvas with others.
Founders then spend the afternoon rotating through one-on-one working sessions with skilled mentors and subject matter experts. These mentors help them work through all of their burning questions that have popped up during their entrepreneurial journey. Finally, all founders leave with a report card on their business - no judgement, no bull, all growth.
Positive and productive, the goal is for founders to leave feeling ready to tackle challenges strategically and effectively.
Here is the breakdown of what to expect when you attend a Startup Clinic:
- Startup Clinics are offered Quarterly
- Clinics take place on Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM with an hour lunch break and an informal post-Clinic Happy Hour
- Founders must have participated in a Startup Lab to attend a Startup Clinic
- Optional Kick-Off Event at Tucson Improv Movement the Friday evening before to laugh and share stories together (see details below)
"I very much appreciated the skills clinic experience. I was challenged to look at my venture in new ways, and to dive deeper into some areas of my plan that needed better defining. Just meeting other entrepreneurs dealing with similar challenges gave me the confidence I was on the right path. I'm so glad I am utilizing such a great resource in locally here in Tucson!"

Before asking founders to dissect their own business, we find it is nice to normalize that being flexible and ready for change is all part of the journey. Enter the Startup Tucson and Tucson Improv Movement Soapbox Series!
Held every Friday before our Quarterly Saturday Clinics, founders attending the Clinic and the broader startup community hear the stories of real entrepreneurs-- dramatically and hilariously brought to life with improv actors -- who have failed fantastically, picked themselves back up, and moved on to success.
